A least complex fertility procedure called Artificial insemination (AI) is tried first in uncomplicated cases of infertility. This technique places the sperm either directly in the cervix (called intracervical insemination) or into the uterus (called intrauterine insemination, or IUI). IUI is the less expensive and standard AI procedure and poses less risk for multiple births.

The IUI procedure: A woman may or may not under fertility drugs depending on the condition. Sperm is collected from the partner at the time of ovulation and has to undergo the process of washing. They are then inserted into the uterine cavity through a long, thin catheter.
